Gjornâl Furlan des Siencis

The Gjornâl Furlan des Siencis (GFS) is one of the strategic objectives of the Societât Sientifiche e Tecnologjiche Furlane (SSTeF). The organisation of the GFS into three sections answers the need to present:

  • original research, in Friulian and English, so that it may be read by scholars of the sciences throughout the world;
  • scientific reviews (in Friulian only) on important scientific subjects;
  • reviews in Friulian of scientific books.

Everyone knows that for the time being the international language of the sciences is English; before the Second World War it was German. For scientists it makes little difference which language is used to set out the results of a piece of research: any language will serve. What matters is having something significant to report.

Alongside the international language of the sciences, in every nation scientists use their own language to speak in the laboratory and to teach their students.

In France, for example, French is used in laboratories and in teaching; in Germany, German; in Flanders, Dutch; in Catalonia, Catalan. Many Friulian scientists have therefore considered that here in Friuli too — in our scientific laboratories, in our schools and in the University — we have every good reason to use Friulian.
In order to be able to use Friulian in laboratories and, above all, to teach the sciences, a scientific journal was needed in which, alongside the results of research, one could begin to bring into the Friulian language — as already happens with German, French, Spanish and so on — the new words that are coined day by day in the sciences.

Having a Journal of the Sciences in Friulian is a sign of the vitality of the mother tongue for the many scientists and technicians who live, work and, above all, think in Friulian. All of them are invited to lend a hand so that the Gjornâl Furlan des Siencis may become a point of reference for scientific life and for the teaching of the sciences in Friuli.
